QUESTIONS

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK

Right at the start, when you’re considering a new website,
you might not know who to approach or what to ask.

How will you find an excellent website design partner and what you should ask them?

Here are our thoughts:

Do I really need a website

If you’re in business, the answer’s almost certainly ‘Yes’. It used to be essential to have a listing in the Yellow Pages, so that your customers would find your business. Now they will search first on the Internet. If your business doesn’t have a web presence, you don’t exist.

I don’t know where to start

The best website designers understand your confusion. They will take time to explore your business requirements and to answer your questions. Step away from those who don’t offer this courtesy.

What should I research?

It’s helpful to have an idea of what you like, as far and design and functionality is concerned. Find websites you like the look of and talk to other business owners about theirs. When you see something suitable, the web designer’s name is often at the bottom of the home page. Many web design companies are listed on theBestof or search Google for ‘web design’ in your local area; for example, ‘web design Forest of Dean’.

Which designer should I choose?

Then choose at least three companies and approach them with a list of your questions. Don’t be nervous about this - it’s important to do your homework at this stage. After your research, it should be a simple decision for you.

How much will it cost?

The all-important question! Whatever you’re buying, from a pair of shoes to a luxury yacht, it all depends on what you want.  Websites are certainly no exception to that. Free websites have their limitations, but are suitable for some businesses wanting a simple web presence. At the opposite end of the spectrum are complex e-commerce or interactive sites, which can cost into the thousands of pounds. Most companies won’t need this. They will want a reasonably priced, professionally produced website that’s easy to update.

I’ve found a website designer. What should I ask?

A good designer will be happy to answer questions about anything that is relevant to you and your business.

For example:

What will it cost? Is it a fixed price?

How long will it take to complete the site?

Is it a site that is being built from a template?

(In other words will your site look very similar to hundreds of others, as opposed to being designed from scratch?)

What is the cost of hosting the site? Can you arrange your own hosting if you decide on that option?

Ask to see websites they have completed and talk to their existing clients.

Are links to your social media accounts, such as Facebook

and Twitter, included in the price?

What about your email address and email forwarding?

Is basic SEO (search engine optimisation) included?

(SEO optimised copy improves your ranking on sites like Google and makes your business easier to find online.)

Once the site is live, can you update it yourself?

Are you constricted by a contract that ties you in for a lengthy period?

Will you receive personal attention?

Needless to say, if the responses to your questions

aren’t clear, move on to another provider.
